Tamaka Fisher originally opened Steveston Village Gallery
in May of
2004 as a storefront gallery in Steveston, B.C.,
Canada on the waterfront.
Tamaka has studied at Emily Carr
College of Art and Design and is
mostly a self-taught visual
artist. She has been painting since the early
1980's and has
exhibited at the Richmond Art Gallery, Open Art,
Gulf of Georgia
Gallery and other exhibitions including her own gallery.
Tamaka volunteers on the board of Richmond Arts Coalition (RAC),
the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Arts and Business
Task Force,
and Richmond Public Arts Commission. She is also a garden designer and has her
Certificate of Garden Design
from the University of British
Columbia. Her most recent exploration in the arts was writing
a short play, Okazu, for the Gateway Theatre's 'Sea of Stories'
production. The play is one of six stories of immigration, culture
and change and was performed on May 6, 2007 at the Gateway.
The play will be archived at the Richmond Library and distributed
to all Richmond high schools.
Steveston Village Gallery was created to promote, showcase,
and sell the works of talented painters, potters, sculptors,
jewellers, and glass blowers. Over 100 artists participated in
the gallery exhibits and sold pieces.
After two years of running
the
storefront, Tamaka decided to switch gears.
She saw a different, simpler way of doing things. Why not bring
art directly to clients? Most clients already wanted to see pieces
in their
homes first before making a decision. And that is
how
the new Steveston Village Gallery came into being.
Tamaka is
thankful for all the wonderful people she has met that have
supported and continue to support Steveston Village Gallery
and artists.
Garden design is also a passion for Tamaka. She sees garden
design
as a natural extension of her visual arts and uses a palette
of trees, plants, wood, stone and water to create personal
spaces that
speak to the uniqueness of the individuals they
are created for. Her designs are sensitive to the needs of her
clients and considerations of each site. Her designs are
executed by her husband, Roy, and his company
Wild West Gardens Ltd. To find out more about Roy Fisher and
